TWO BIG G.T. EVENTS!!!
*Ever wish you could dress up like a gangster or a flapper? You can at our SPEAKEASY NIGHT (parents invited, but MUST also dress the time period!) Details are secret --just like finding the speakeasy will be!
*Although we will never begin to understand the hardships of living in a Hooverville --students will get a "small" idea of what it was like, as students spend the night in a Hooverville --camped outside, without digital devises, junk food, "and" indoor plumbing.
We used "Annie JR" which is available from Musical Theater International. Their resources are amazing!!! Student scripts include information about theater terms, vocabulary --the list goes on. The resources for the Director have everything from a DVD with dances for songs and a book with staging directions, set ideas, etc.. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND Musical Theater International's resources. Parents, are you interested in the iBooks kids will be using? I love creating them for my kiddos! Take a look and notice the activities and critical thinking responses for each topic. Students will house their responses in their digital portfolios.

We will also be using two historical fiction books (I have class sets so each child has one!) to help kids really get a feel for what it was like living then.
"Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse (sadly, no relation...) This gripping story, written in sparse first-person, free-verse poems, is the compelling tale of Billie Jo's struggle to survive during the dust bowl years of the Depression. With stoic courage, she learns to cope with the loss of her mother and her grieving father's slow deterioration. There is hope at the end when Billie Jo's badly burned hands are healed, and she is able to play her beloved piano again. The 1998 Newbery Medal winner. There is a lavish party scene in "The Gallery" reminiscent of "The Great Gatsby" which captures the essence of the Roaring Twenties... |
"The Gallery" takes place in New York City during the Roaring Twenties. It's 1929, and twelve-year-old Martha has no choice but to work as a maid in the New York City mansion of the wealthy Sewell family. But, despite the Gatsby-like parties and trimmings of success, she suspects something might be deeply wrong in the household—specifically with Rose Sewell, the formerly vivacious lady of the house who now refuses to leave her room. The other servants say Rose is crazy, but scrappy, strong-willed Martha thinks there’s more to the story—and that the paintings in the Sewell’s gallery contain a hidden message detailing the truth. But in a house filled with secrets, nothing is quite what it seems, and no one is who they say. (Inspired by true events) This book contains actual historical characters from the time period!
