Why the Plays?
***G.T. kids are continually extending their academic skills in the classroom; this will pick up even more in high school in Advanced Placement classes. Today's world requires oral communication skills. Regardless of the profession students enter, they will be speaking in front of others. The fear of public speaking remains the number one fear in our country. The very best way to insure our children do NOT have this fear is through public performances such as plays. Children develop confidence in their ability to speak before an audience when they are well prepared and feel that what they are involved in has real merit. Kids know the difference. This confidence is something they internalize and take with them throughout school and on into their professional careers. Besides, involvement in a theater experience is fun, involves parents, and creates long lasting memories!

ALL $$$ from HARRISBURG PERFORMANCE WILL GO TO "THE MIRACLE LEAGUE"
PLAY DATES: ***The G.T. Kids will be doing 3 plays, all related to immigration and Ellis Island in the late 1800's & early 1900's. The plays are too long to do on the same night. Dates for The Hundred Dresses:
Clean up Day on Stage: March 6th (9:00 AM). We need to clear everything off, work on dressing rooms, get everything stripped down. THIS IS A JOB, BUT GOES FASTER THE MORE PEOPLE THERE ARE!
Set up Stage: May 7th (morning) --big stage things like furniture need to be there before so kids can practice with them (unfortunately with 3 plays we will have to move stuff on and off)
Dress Rehearsal: May 7th (a Wednesday) after lunch until we are finished (will probably run after school)
Performances: May 9th at 1:30 for elementary school
May 9th at 6:30 pm (public performance)
May 14th at 8:30 am (move set to Harrisburg, rehearsal)
May 15th (Harrisburg Performing Arts Bldg)

HOW CAN I BEST HELP MY CHILD LEARN HIS/HER PART?
BY THE WAY... MEMORIZATION IS SOMETHING KIDS DON'T DO A LOT OF IN SCHOOL ANYMORE. IN THE OLDEN DAYS (when I was in school), there was a lot of that. Memorization is like most things, kids get quicker and retain what they memorize longer as they practice. You will find that working on memorizing lines will transfer to your child's ability to study and remember information for a test! A GREAT PERK FOR DOING A PLAY!!!
1. Start small. Work in small chunks. Once they have their first down, begin work on the second line. Then go back and work on line one and two BEFORE you move on to line three. Continue to go back so they don't lose what they have already learned.
2. Say the line just in front of their's each time so they know WHEN to say their line.
3. Help them think of funny ways to remember words that trip them up.
4. Encourage your child to speak in phrases instead of sentences. Most kids talk to fast and are hard to understand. I have them break their sentences up (after they learn them) --immediately they are easier to understand.

NEED HELP WITH --
SET
TICKET SALES --we want to try selling tickets ahead of time so that people have the option of paying a cheaper price for all 3 plays (The Story of Annie Moore, Mrs. Dunn's Lovely, Lovely Farm, and The Hundred Dresses). For instance, the price for one play is $5 OR they can purchase a pass for all three plays for $10. I need a parent to help organize this!
CAST PARTY: Anyone willing to take it on? What about renting pool at Harrisburg and have a cookout?

We will need room dividers for Harrisburg production to hang dresses/car art on.
COSTUMES
Wanda
GIRL'S DRESSES & SHOES (anklets, saddle oxfords, mary jane shoes, loafers & book satchels & big hair bows)
Peggy's dress needs to be "over the top" --she is the top dog!
...you guys might look for someone who square dances --they wear those fully skirted dresses.
GIRL'S HAIRSTYLES --CURLS AND BOWS...mix it up. Not everyone with same hairdo
Maddie -- her school dress needs to be rather plain to make her look different.
She needs a really pretty dress to change into at the end --one that is a solid color and is very noticeable! She will need to draw a picture that looks as much like that dress as she can in G.T. class that will be used in the play.

Cecile
Cecile needs a showy dress, but make sure it does not upstage Peggy's who is the queen bee (Glinda in WICKED).
Cecile also needs a dance dress (the picture shows an idea, except you might want it pink to match the toe shoes) and toe shoes to carry to school (she will make a quick change out of the dance dress into her other dress in between acts

PAPER DOLL DANCERS (Peggy, Cecile, Betty, Jean, Molly)
Fronts only --they don't need the paper hair bow or purse or pantaloons sticking out. They need the tabs showing on the dress though. CHALLENGE: figure out a way that the dress will stay on while they are dancing. Don't make the dress too long so it won't interfere with their movement. The dresses can each be different or all the same --whatever you decide. I'm not even sure what it would best to make them out of. In other words --you're on your own with this one!

Bill Byron & Jack Beggles
anything the Little Rascals guys would wear. Try not to dress alike. Be careful not to wear modern looking shoes.
Bill --how bout a slingshot in your pocket!

Bill needs a cap like this!
Jacob (Wanda's brother)
The Imaginary Friend --
Should be in white, kinda sheer and ethereal. Not a fancy dress, actually plain. Hints of an angel, but subtle. Barefoot. Nothing in hair. No froo froo. Elegant. Something that looks nothing like the dresses the others will wear.
